          printed to be committed to the Committee on Education
 
        AN ACT to amend  the  education  law,  in  relation  to  providing  that
          elections  to fill an increased number of seats on a school board will
          be conducted at the annual meeting  after  the  number  of  seats  was
          increased

          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 1703  of  the  education  law,  as
     2  amended  by  chapter  797  of  the  laws  of 1957, is amended to read as
     3  follows:
     4    3. The additional members first elected shall be elected at [a special
     5  meeting which shall be called by the board and be  held  not  less  than
     6  thirty  nor  more than sixty days] the annual meeting next following the
     7  annual meeting at which the number was increased, and pending the  first
     8  election  of such additional members no vacancy shall be deemed to exist
     9  in the offices thereof except for the purpose of  filling  the  same  by
    10  election, notwithstanding any inconsistent provision of any law.
    11    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
