        Introduced  by Sen. SCARCELLA-SPANTON -- read twice and ordered printed,
          and when printed to be committed to  the  Committee  on  Education  --
          recommitted  to  the  Committee on Education in accordance with Senate
          Rule  6,  sec.  8  --  committee  discharged,  bill  amended,  ordered
          reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee

        AN  ACT  to  amend the education law, in relation to clarifying that the
          writing requirement that is  part  of  compulsory  education  includes
          cursive writing
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. Subparagraph 1 of paragraph a of subdivision 3  of  section
     2  3204 of the education law, as amended by chapter 14 of the laws of 1958,
     3  is amended to read as follows:
     4    (1)  The course of study for the first eight years of full time public
     5  day schools shall provide for instruction in at least the twelve  common
     6  school  branches  of  arithmetic,  reading, spelling, writing, including
     7  cursive writing, the English language, geography, United States history,
     8  civics, hygiene, physical training, the history of New  York  state  and
     9  science.
    10    §  2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall apply to school
    11  years commencing on the first of July next succeeding the date on  which
    12  it shall have become a law.
