AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to providing
distinctive license plates for family members of police officers
killed in the line of duty and eliminating the registration fee for
family member distinctive license plates
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The vehicle and traffic law is amended by adding a new
2 section 404-ff to read as follows:
3 § 404-ff. Distinctive plates for families of police officers killed in
4 the line of duty. 1. Any parent of a police officer killed in the line
5 of duty or the spouse of a parent of a police officer killed in the line
6 of duty, or the surviving spouse of a fallen police officer, or any
7 child, step-child, sibling, step-sibling, or grandparent of a fallen
8 police officer residing in this state shall, upon request, be issued a
9 license plate bearing the words "police officer killed in the line of
10 duty family". If a distinctive plate is issued to a family member of a
11 police officer killed in the line of duty pursuant to this section,
12 additional distinctive plates may be issued for every vehicle registered
13 in the name of the family member of a police officer killed in the line
14 of duty recipient residing in this state or the spouse of a police offi-
15 cer killed in the line of duty family member. Application for said
16 license plate shall be filed with the commissioner in such form and
17 detail as the commissioner shall prescribe.
18 2. The distinctive plate authorized herein shall be issued upon proof,
19 satisfactory to the commissioner, that the applicant or the spouse of
20 the applicant is a parent or the spouse of a fallen police officer
21 parent, or the surviving spouse of a fallen police officer, or any
22 child, step-child, sibling, step-sibling, or grandparent of a fallen
23 police officer.
24 3. A distinctive plate issued pursuant to this section shall be issued
25 in the same manner as other number plates provided, however, no regis-
26 tration fee or service charge shall be charged for such plate.

1 § 2. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall
2 have become a law. Effective immediately, the addition, amendment and/or
3 repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for the implementation of
4 this act on its effective date are authorized to be made and completed
5 on or before such date.
