Allows the chancellor of the city district of the city of New York to require pupils in public schools in the borough of Brooklyn or in the borough of Queens to attend school on anniversary day, but to declare a holiday for such pupils on an alternate date in the same school year to allow for the celebration of a significant cultural or religious holiday.

AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to allowing for an alter-
nated holiday for pupils in all public schools in the borough of
Brooklyn or in the borough of Queens
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Section 2586 of the education law, as amended by chapter
2 437 of the laws of 2008, is amended to read as follows:
3 § 2586. Anniversary day as a holiday for pupils in the public schools
4 of the borough of Brooklyn and in the borough of Queens, city of New
5 York. 1. The first Thursday in June in each year, except in those years
6 when the first Thursday in June occurs in the same week with Memorial
7 day, and in such years the second Thursday in June, known as anniversary
8 day, and celebrated in commemoration of the organization of Sunday
9 schools, is hereby made and declared to be a holiday for pupils in all
10 the public schools in the borough of Brooklyn and in the borough of
11 Queens, city of New York, and pupils shall not be required to attend the
12 public schools in such boroughs on such day.
13 2. Notwithstanding the provisions of subdivision one of this section,
14 the chancellor may require pupils in the public schools in the borough
15 of Brooklyn and in the borough of Queens to attend school on anniversary
16 day, but must declare a public school holiday for all pupils in the city
17 of New York on an alternate date in the same school year to allow for
18 the celebration of a significant cultural or religious holiday including
19 Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Asian Lunar New Year, Passover, Rosh
20 Hashanah, Yom Kippur or any other religious or cultural holiday which is
21 celebrated by a significant portion of the pupils attending the public
22 schools of the city of New York.
23 § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding
24 the date upon which it shall have become a law.
