AN ACT to amend the agriculture and markets law, in relation to provid-
ing notice of packaging date for meats, poultry and seafood
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The agriculture and markets law is amended by adding a new
2 section 213-a to read as follows:
3 § 213-a. Consumer notice. 1. As used in this section: "Retail food
4 store" means any store selling food at retail, which store is not prima-
5 rily engaged in the sale of food for consumption on the premises.
6 2. A retail food store which offers for sale fresh or processed meats,
7 poultry or seafood shall conspicuously post a sign situated so as to be
8 clearly visible to any consumer inspecting such product. The sign shall
9 read:
10 "NOTICE: You have the right to know where and when fresh or processed
11 meats, poultry or seafood offered for sale were cut and packaged. In
12 addition, you have the right to know what store practices are in
13 relation to the date marked on such products.
14 If you have any questions regarding the packaging of these products,
15 please see the store management or personnel for assistance."
16 3. Such sign shall be printed with lettering that is legible and shall
17 be three-fourths of an inch boldface type.
18 § 2. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall
19 have become a law.
