        AN ACT to amend the multiple dwelling  law,  in  relation  to  temporary
          certificates of compliance or occupancy
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. Subdivision 4 of section 301 of the multiple dwelling  law,
     2  as  amended  by  chapter  131  of the laws of 1979, is amended and a new
     3  subdivision 8 is added to read as follows:
     4    4. The head of the department may, on the request of the owner or  his
     5  certified agent, issue a temporary certificate of compliance or occupan-
     6  cy  for  a multiple dwelling or a section or a part thereof for a period
     7  of ninety days or less, provided that such certificate  shall  bear  the
     8  endorsement  that  the dwelling has been inspected by the department and
     9  complies with all the requirements of this chapter, and that such tempo-
    10  rary occupancy will not jeopardize life, health or property. Such tempo-
    11  rary certificate may be renewed once at the discretion of  the  head  of
    12  the  department for similar periods but shall not extend[, together with
    13  such renewals,] beyond a total period of [two years] one hundred  eighty
    14  days  from the date of its original issuance.
    15    8.  Any  person  found to have violated the provisions of this section
    16  shall be liable for a civil penalty of not  more  than  twenty  thousand
    17  dollars.
    18    § 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
