        AN ACT to amend the  public  officers  law,  in  relation  to  residency
          requirements for certain positions
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. Subdivision 41 of section 3 of the public officers law,  as
     2  added by chapter 174 of the laws of 1998, is amended to red as follows:
     3    41.  In the county of Putnam, the provisions of this section requiring
     4  a person to be a resident of  the  political  subdivision  or  municipal
     5  corporation of the state for which such person shall be chosen or within
     6  which  such  person's  official  functions are required to be exercised,
     7  shall not prevent a person from holding the office of deputy sheriff  in
     8  Putnam county, provided, however, that such person performing the duties
     9  and functions of deputy sheriff resides in [Putnam county or any adjoin-
    10  ing county within] New York state unless otherwise provided by an act of
    11  the state legislature.
    12    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
