AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the requiring of CPR
certification and Heimlich maneuver training among teachers and lunch
monitors in school cafeterias
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 3001-e
2 to read as follows:
3 § 3001-e. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and Heim-
4 lich maneuver training for teachers and lunch monitors in cafeterias. On
5 and after the effective date of this section, it shall be required of
6 supervising teachers and other personnel overseeing a school cafeteria,
7 to hold a valid certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to be
8 trained in the administration of the Heimlich maneuver. Prior to the
9 start of each school year, supervising teachers and other personnel
10 shall provide valid evidence to their chief school officer that (i)
11 their cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge and skills are current
12 pursuant to the requirements certified by the commissioner and (ii) that
13 they have received training in the administration of the Heimlich maneu-
14 ver.
15 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
