        AN  ACT  to  amend  the  legislative  law, in relation to establishing a
          giving internships for disabled veterans not  fully  employed  program
          (G.I.V.E.  Back NY)
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. The legislative law is amended by adding a new article  6-B
     2  to read as follows:
     3                                  ARTICLE 6-B
     4                  GIVING INTERNSHIPS FOR DISABLED VETERANS
     5                         NOT FULLY EMPLOYED PROGRAM
     6                             (G.I.V.E. BACK NY)
     7  Section 97. Giving internships for disabled veterans not fully
     8                employed program (G.I.V.E. Back NY).
     9    § 97. Giving  internships  for  disabled  veterans  not fully employed
    10  program (G.I.V.E. Back NY). 1. There is hereby  established  within  the
    11  legislature  a  G.I.V.E.  Back  NY  program to provide opportunities for
    12  service-disabled veterans to participate in the assembly  youth  partic-
    13  ipation program and the senate student program. Such program shall award
    14  ten percent of available internships in the assembly youth participation
    15  program  and the senate student program to eligible honorably discharged
    16  veterans with service-connected disabilities.  Veterans who are  awarded
    17  internships  pursuant  to  the  G.I.V.E. Back NY program shall receive a
    18  stipend that is equivalent to the stipend awarded  to  graduate  student
    19  participants  in  the  assembly  youth  participation program and senate
    20  student program for a one semester internship.
 
         EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets

     1    2. To be eligible to participate in the G.I.V.E. Back  NY  program,  a
     2  candidate shall:
     3    (a) be honorably discharged from the armed forces of the United States
     4  with  service-connected  disabilities as determined by the United States
     5  department of veterans  affairs  or  the  United  States  department  of
     6  defense;
     7    (b) be unemployed or underemployed;
     8    (c)  have  demonstrated  an  interest  in  future employment in public
     9  service, government or public policy; and
    10    (d) submit an application for participation in the  G.I.V.E.  Back  NY
    11  program  to  the senate or assembly. Such application shall be made in a
    12  manner and form as determined by the senate and the assembly.
    13    3. In an effort to foster and encourage participation in the  G.I.V.E.
    14  Back NY program, the assembly intern office and the senate intern office
    15  shall  coordinate  with  each  other  and with county veterans' services
    16  agencies to identify and recruit eligible candidates.
    17    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
