        AN ACT to amend the general municipal  law,  in  relation  to  requiring
          street numbers to be displayed on buildings
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. The general municipal  law  is  amended  by  adding  a  new
     2  section 125-b to read as follows:
     3    § 125-b. Posting of street numbers. 1. Requirements. The owner, agent,
     4  lessee  or  other  person  in  charge of any building or dwelling upon a
     5  street to which street numbers  of  buildings  or  dwellings  have  been
     6  assigned by the municipality in which such building or dwelling is situ-
     7  ated,  shall cause the proper street number or numbers of such buildings
     8  or dwellings to be displayed in such manner that the  street  number  or
     9  numbers may at all times be plainly legible from a vehicle on the street
    10  in  front of such building or dwelling under clear weather conditions at
    11  all times of the day. Such number or numbers shall be  equipped  with  a
    12  light  source which is in good working condition, during the period from
    13  one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before  sunrise.  The  light
    14  source  shall  illuminate  the  number or numbers and encompass a two to
    15  four inch border surrounding such number or numbers.   The term  "front"
    16  as  used  in  this  section  shall be construed to mean that side of the
    17  building or dwelling which faces the  street  on  which  the  number  or
    18  numbers  of  such building or dwelling have been allotted. The number or
    19  numbers shall be displayed on such side of such  building  or  dwelling.
    20  Each  municipality  shall  have the power to establish and enforce rules
    21  and regulations relating to the size,  form,  visibility,  location  and
    22  lighting  of  street numbers in accordance with the requirements of this
    23  section.

     1    2. Violations. If the owner, agent, lessee or other person  in  charge
     2  of  any  building  or  dwelling upon a street to which street numbers of
     3  buildings or dwellings have been assigned by the municipality  in  which
     4  such  building  or dwelling is situated shall fail to display the proper
     5  street  number  or  numbers of such building or dwelling, as provided in
     6  subdivision one of this section, the municipality in which such building
     7  or dwelling is situated shall forthwith serve  such  person  or  persons
     8  with  a  copy  of  this  section,  and if after thirty days' notice, the
     9  owner, lessee, agent or other person  in  charge  of  such  building  or
    10  dwelling shall fail or neglect to comply with the provisions thereof, he
    11  or she shall be subject to a penalty of twenty-five dollars, which shall
    12  be  sued  for  and collected in the name of the municipality. Any person
    13  who shall continue any such violation shall be punished by an additional
    14  fine of five dollars for each day such violation continues.
    15    § 2. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day  after  it  shall
    16  have become a law.
