        Introduced  by  M.  of  A.  TAGUE,  BRABENEC, MILLER, E. BROWN, SMULLEN,
          HAWLEY, GALLAHAN, GUNTHER, MIKULIN, DAVILA, LEMONDES -- read once  and
          referred to the Committee on Education
 
        AN  ACT  to  amend the education law, in relation to instruction in food
          and agriculture

          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 804-e
     2  to read as follows:
     3    § 804-e. Agriculture curriculum or instruction. 1.  The  commissioner,
     4  in  consultation with the commissioner of agriculture and markets, shall
     5  establish curriculum or instruction for school districts  regarding  the
     6  practice of farming and agriculture, including but not limited to horti-
     7  culture, agricultural literacy, food production, food manufacturing, and
     8  agribusiness,  among  other  topics. In determining such curriculum, the
     9  commissioner shall include a hands-on instructional  component  that  is
    10  age  appropriate and demonstrates the material value of New York's farm-
    11  ing industry.
    12    2. Schools may include the above  materials  as  a  component  of  its
    13  science curriculum or any other way the school deems appropriate.
    14    §  2. This act shall take effect the first of July next succeeding the
    15  date on which it shall have become a law,  and  shall  apply  to  school
    16  years commencing on or after such date. Effective immediately, the addi-
    17  tion,  amendment  and/or  repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for
    18  the implementation of this act on its effective date are  authorized  to
    19  be made and completed on or before such effective date.
