        AN ACT to amend the  education  law,  in  relation  to  notification  of
          parents and guardians
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. Section 305 of the education law is amended by adding a new
     2  subdivision 56 to read as follows:
     3    56. The commissioner is authorized and directed  to  promulgate  rules
     4  and  regulations  to require all school districts to establish a program
     5  to notify parents or guardians of school children when potentially  life
     6  threatening occurrences have taken place on school grounds. For purposes
     7  of  this subdivision life threatening occurrences shall include, but not
     8  be limited to, bomb threats and the discovery or  recovery  of  guns  or
     9  other weapons from students.
    10    § 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after
    11  it  shall  have  become a law. Effective immediately the commissioner of
    12  education is authorized to promulgate such rules and regulations as  may
    13  be  necessary  to  carry out the provisions of this act on its effective
    14  date.
