        AN  ACT to amend the education law, in relation to directing the commis-
          sioner of education  to  develop  and  conduct  programs  designed  to
          prevent suicide among youths
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 

     1    Section 1. Section 305 of the education law is amended by adding a new
     2  subdivision 43 to read as follows:
     3    43. a. The  commissioner,  in  consultation  with  the  department  of
     4  health,  the  office  of  mental  health, and the office of children and
     5  family services shall develop training programs  in  the  prevention  of
     6  suicide  of  youths  for  use  by  and at no cost to classroom teachers,
     7  teaching assistants, pupil personnel services professionals, and  school
     8  administrators  or  supervisors in public schools and in accordance with
     9  respective collective bargaining agreements.
    10    b. The commissioner shall direct each board  of  education  to  inform
    11  staff  listed  in paragraph a of this subdivision employed by such board

    12  of the resources available to them  from  other  departments  and  other
    13  sources  regarding  the  prevention of suicide pursuant to this subdivi-
    14  sion.
    15    § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July  next  succeeding
    16  the date on which it shall have become a law.
