        AN  ACT  to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to documenta-
          tion required to obtain a driver's license
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1.  Section  508 of the vehicle and traffic law is amended by
     2  adding a new subdivision 6 to read as follows:
     3    6. Notwithstanding the provisions of subdivision one of  section  five
     4  hundred  two  of  this  article which require the submission of a social
     5  security card, the commissioner shall promulgate rules  and  regulations
     6  which  direct  that  agents  issuing  licenses  under this article shall
     7  accept as proof of identification a copy of the federal documents  filed
     8  by  a  foreign national with the federal government to apply for federal
     9  immigrant status classified as Registered Provisional  Immigrant  (RPI).
    10  The license issued shall be a temporary license which shall be identical
    11  to  a  standard license and shall include a photograph of the applicant.
    12  Such temporary license shall be valid for a period of one year, provided
    13  that the commissioner may grant an extension  of  such  period,  not  to
    14  exceed  six months, based upon delays by the federal government in issu-
    15  ing such status.
    16    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
