AN ACT to amend the judiciary law, in relation to the number of justices
of the supreme court in the second and thirteenth judicial districts
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Subdivisions 2 and 13 of section 140-a of the judiciary
2 law, subdivision 2 as amended and subdivision 13 as added by chapter 690
3 of the laws of 2007, are amended to read as follows:
4 2. Second district, [forty-nine] fifty-two;
5 13. Thirteenth district, [three] ten.
6 § 2. Justice Thomas P. Aliotta, and his successor in office on the
7 effective date of this act shall for the remainder of the term for which
8 he or she was elected or appointed be a justice of the supreme court in
9 and for the thirteenth judicial district.
10 § 3. Two of the additional justices of the supreme court in the thir-
11 teenth judicial district and two additional justices of the supreme
12 court in the second judicial district provided for by section one of
13 this act shall first be elected at the general election to be held in
14 November 2017 and shall first take office January 1, 2018. Another
15 three of the additional justices of the supreme court in the thirteenth
16 judicial district and the other two justices of the supreme court in the
17 second judicial district provided for by section one of this act shall
18 first be elected at the general election to be held in November 2018 and
19 shall first take office January 1, 2019. The remaining additional
20 justice of the supreme court in the thirteenth judicial district
21 provided for by section one of this act shall first be elected at the

1 general election to be held in November 2019 and shall first take office
2 January 1, 2020.
3 § 4. This act shall take effect immediately.
