AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to establishing the
office of university coordinator for veterans' services and to amend
the executive law, in relation to requiring the division of veterans'
affairs to assist the state university of New York and the city
university of New York in coordinating services to assist veterans
returning to the classroom
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Subdivision 2 of section 355 of the education law is
2 amended by adding a new paragraph y to read as follows:
3 y. To establish the office of university coordinator for veterans'
4 services, which office shall be located at the central administration
5 division. The coordinator shall be appointed by the state university
6 trustees and serve at its pleasure. The coordinator shall be an honor-
7 ably discharged veteran as defined in section three hundred fifty of the
8 executive law. The coordinator's duties shall include, but not be limit-
9 ed to, identification, development, planning a detailed plan to assist
10 veterans in making the transition into the classroom after completing
11 their military service. The coordinator shall consult with the division
12 of veterans' affairs. The coordinator for veterans' services may appoint
13 a veterans' affairs director at each state operated institution in the
14 state university system.
15 § 2. Section 353 of the executive law is amended by adding a new
16 subdivision 2-a to read as follows:
17 2-a. To assist the state university of New York and the city universi-
18 ty of New York in coordinating a comprehensive array of services to
19 assist veterans in making the transition into the classroom. The
20 services may include, but not be limited to, assistance in applying for
21 state and federal student financial aid and counseling resources.

1 § 3. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall
2 have become a law, provided that any rules or regulations necessary for
3 the implementation of this act on its effective date shall be promulgat-
4 ed on or before such date.
