AN ACT to amend the public authorities law, in relation to authorizing
and directing the metropolitan transportation authority to implement a
free fare program for firefighters on the LIRR
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Subdivision 14 of section 1266 of the public authorities
2 law, as amended by chapter 182 of the laws of 2013, is amended to read
3 as follows:
4 14. Notwithstanding any other provisions of law or the terms of any
5 contract, the authority, in consultation with the Long Island Rail Road,
6 shall establish and implement a no fare program for transportation on
7 the Long Island Rail Road for police officers, firefighters and fire
8 officers employed by the city of New York, county of Nassau, Nassau
9 county villages and cities, county of Suffolk, Suffolk county villages
10 and towns, the division of state police, the port authority of New York
11 and New Jersey, the Metro-North Commuter Railroad Company, the New York
12 city housing authority and the New York city transit authority. In
13 establishing such program, which has as its goal increased protection
14 and improved safety for its commuters, the authority and the Long Island
15 Rail Road shall, among other things, consider: (a) requiring police
16 officers, firefighters and fire officers who ride without cost to regis-
17 ter with the Long Island Rail Road as a condition of riding without
18 cost; (b) requiring such officers and firefighters to indicate during
19 such registration process their regular working hours and the Long
20 Island Rail Road trains that such officers and firefighters expect to
21 ride; and (c) periodically re-registering and re-validating such offi-
22 cers and firefighters. The authority and the Long Island Rail Road shall
23 also have the power to consider other matters necessary to carry out the
24 goals and objectives of this section.
25 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
