        Introduced by M. of A. ABBATE -- Multi-Sponsored by -- M. of A. BRENNAN,
          GOLDFEDER  --  read once and referred to the Committee on Governmental
          Employees -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted  as
          amended and recommitted to said committee
 
        AN  ACT  to  amend  the  labor law, in relation to providing that police
          officers and firefighters employed by bi-state authorities are covered

          under health and safety standards for public employees
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1. Paragraphs a and d of subdivision 1 of section 27-a of the
     2  labor law, as added by chapter 729 of the laws of 1980, are  amended  to
     3  read as follows:
     4    a. "Employer" means the state, any political subdivision of the state,
     5  a  public authority, a bi-state authority utilizing its own police offi-
     6  cers or firefighters or any other governmental agency or instrumentality
     7  thereof.
     8    d. "Public employee" means any employee of the  state,  any  political
     9  subdivision  of  the  state,  a  public  authority, a bi-state authority
    10  utilizing its own police officers or firefighters or any  other  govern-
    11  mental agency or instrumentality.

    12    §  2.  This  act  shall take effect upon the enactment into law by the
    13  state of New Jersey of legislation having an identical effect with  this
    14  act,  but  if  the  state  of New Jersey shall have already enacted such
    15  legislation, this act shall take effect immediately; provided  that  the
    16  state  of  New Jersey shall notify the legislative bill drafting commis-
    17  sion upon the occurrence of the enactment of  the  legislation  provided
    18  for in section one of this act in order that the commission may maintain
    19  an  accurate  and timely effective data base of the official text of the
    20  laws of the state  of  New  York  in  furtherance  of  effectuating  the
    21  provisions  of section 44 of the legislative law and section 70-b of the
    22  public officers law.
