AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring that the
number of seats available in each borough for specialized high schools
in the city of New York shall be proportionate to the number of public
school students in each borough
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Paragraph (b) of subdivision 1 of section 2590-h of the
2 education law, as amended by chapter 345 of the laws of 2009, is amended
3 to read as follows:
4 (b) all specialized senior high schools; provided, however, that the
5 seats available for specialized high schools shall be available in each
6 borough in numbers proportionate to the population of public school
7 students in each borough. The special high schools shall include the
8 present schools known as:
9 The Bronx High School of Science, Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn
10 Technical High School, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and
11 the Arts in the borough of Manhattan, and such further schools which the
12 city board may designate from time to time. The special schools shall be
13 permitted to maintain a discovery program in accordance with the law in
14 effect on the date preceding the effective date of this section; admis-
15 sions to the special schools shall be conducted in accordance with the
16 law in effect on the date preceding the effective date of this section;
17 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately; provided that the amend-
18 ments to paragraph (b) of subdivision 1 of section 2590-h of the educa-
19 tion law made by section one of this act shall not affect the expiration
20 and reversion of such section and shall be deemed to expire therewith.
