        AN ACT to amend the mental hygiene law, in relation to  requiring  emer-
          gency  services  facilities  to provide immediate suicide risk assess-
          ments to acute psychiatric patients
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1.  The mental hygiene law is amended by adding a new section
     2  33.29 to read as follows:
     3  § 33.29 Emergency services facilities immediate  assessment  of  suicide
     4            risk.
     5    (a)  For  purposes  of  this  section, "emergency services facilities"
     6  shall mean buildings, structures, equipment or systems used  to  provide
     7  emergency  medical services to individuals who require immediate medical
     8  attention.
     9    (b) Emergency services facilities shall provide for, as part of  their
    10  patient  intake  process, the immediate assessment of suicide risk in an
    11  acute psychiatric patient who arrives to such facility  seeking  medical
    12  attention.
    13    (c)  Emergency  services  facilities  shall maintain a licensed mental
    14  health professional or emergency services personnel who  have  completed
    15  coursework  or  applied  experience  under  supervision  in suicide risk
    16  assessment and intervention on staff and available during all  hours  of
    17  operation  in  order  to provide for the immediate assessment of suicide
    18  risk as described in subdivision (b) of this section.
    19    § 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after
    20  it shall have become a law.
