COMMENDING Joseph G. Campbell posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor a
Deceased Veteran Ceremony on December 10, 2018
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peacetime, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Joseph G. Campbell posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor a
Deceased Veteran Ceremony to be celebrated on Monday, December 10, 2018;
and
WHEREAS, Born to the late Mary Aloysia (Martley) and James David
Campbell on September 1, 1911, in Colonie, New York, Joseph Gregory
Campbell graduated from St. John's Academy in Rensselaer, New York, in
1930; and
WHEREAS, Following high school, Joseph G. Campbell played on several
basketball and baseball teams for many years, and was selected as the
Most Valuable Player in the Rensselaer Twilight League; and
WHEREAS, On September 19, 1938, Joseph G. Campbell married the
former Henrietta Matson and together, the couple raised three daughters;
Barbara, Carol and Deborah in Rensselaer; he was the loving grandfather
of seven grandchildren, Kathleen, Sheila, Janice, Elizabeth, James,
Eileen and David; and 11 great-grandchildren, Joseph, Ethan,
Christopher, Rory, MacKenzie, Emma, Sarah, John, Gavin, Maci and
Michael; and
WHEREAS, Joseph G. Campbell enlisted in the United States Army on
March 3, 1944, and proudly served his country as a Rifleman with the
71st Division during World War II; he could read maps and use a compass
and consequently, often acted as first scout; and
WHEREAS, For his meritorious service, Joseph G. Campbell was the
recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Service Medal,
the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal; and
WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service on January 16,
1946, Joseph G. Campbell returned to his hometown and owned and operated
Campbell's Sunoco Service Station on Columbia Turnpike for more than 45
years; and
WHEREAS, After his much deserved retirement, Joseph G. Campbell
enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his cherished
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he also loved to spend time
outdoors, whether it was fishing for trout or tending to his vegetable
garden; and
WHEREAS, Joseph G. Campbell died on February 16, 1988, at the age of
76; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Joseph G. Campbell demonstrated his love for his country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Joseph G. Campbell upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor a Deceased Veteran
Ceremony on December 10, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Joseph G. Campbell.
