Senate Resolution No. 1001

        COMMEMORATING  the  125th  Anniversary  of  United
        Helpers in Ogdensburg, New York
 
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of  this  Legislative  Body  to  recognize
institutions  which  faithfully serve the needs of the community and its
citizens with diligence and compassionate commitment  to  improving  the
quality and dignity of life in the community; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate  the  125th Anniversary of United Helpers of Ogdensburg, New
York; and
 
  WHEREAS, United Helpers was  established  in  1898,  when  10  women
pledged  $100  each  to  fund  and  establish  a  Home for the Homeless,
providing care for orphaned children and destitute women; and
 
  WHEREAS, Twelve women from the local church applied for  a  charter,
developed a constitution, and bylaws, creating the Society of the United
Helpers in April of 1898; and
 
  WHEREAS, On May 4, 1898, the first child was placed at the Society's
home located at 22 Congress Street in Ogdensburg; and
 
  WHEREAS,  In  1900,  the  Society  of  United  Helpers expanded to a
2.5-acre lot, and today, consists of two rehabilitation and senior  care
centers,  as  well  as  offering  behavioral health and life skills, and
independent senior living services; and
 
  WHEREAS, Since its inception, United Helpers has  remained  true  to
its  mission  of  serving  the  community  and  helping those in need by
providing post-acute health and human services to over  1,000  people  a
day; and
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown  a
long  and  sustained  commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  125th Anniversary of United Helpers in Ogdensburg, New
York; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to United Helpers of Ogdensburg, New York.
