HONORING Town Clerk Cheryl L. Shackelton upon the
occasion of her retirement after 40 years of
distinguished service to the Town of Oneonta on May
30, 2019
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
the significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed
residents of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Town Clerk Cheryl L. Shackelton upon the occasion of her retirement
after 40 years of distinguished service; and
WHEREAS, Cheryl Shackelton began her career as a planning board
clerk in 1978; later that year, she became zoning board of appeals (ZBA)
clerk; and
WHEREAS, On July 3, 1979, Cheryl Shackelton was appointed town clerk
and registrar of vital statistics; in this capacity, she instituted a
records management plan after attending a town clerk conference;
established the lateral file system for property records by tax number
rather than names; and initiated the organization of local laws and
codes into a code book; and
WHEREAS, She was subsequently elected town clerk and has since won
every election; and in most cases she was unopposed, a testimony to the
esteem in which she was held by those in both parties; and
WHEREAS, She has nearly completed a complete preservation and
restoration of town records, and organized the clerk's office and
records room when the new town hall opened in 1995; and
WHEREAS, For the past 40 years, Cheryl L. Shackelton has rendered
faithful, conscientious and valuable service to the community of
Oneonta, earning the admiration, esteem and affection of her colleagues
and the public; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as Oneonta town clerk, Cheryl Shackelton
served with loyalty, honor and distinction, and was governed by a keen
sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems in her
official acts; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Clerk Cheryl Shackelton upon the occasion of her retirement after
40 years of distinguished service to the Town of Oneonta and its
citizens on May 30, 2019; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Cheryl Shackelton.
