COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of the
founding of the Village of Garden City, New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Village of
Garden City, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Village of Garden City began as the dream of Alexander
Turney Stewart on July 17, 1869, when he purchased 10,000 acres of the
treeless Hempstead Plains area of Long Island stretching from Floral
Park to Bethpage with the idea of creating the first planned community
in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Alexander Turney Stewart developed a relatively small
portion as Garden City, which is known today, as the central section of
the village; and
WHEREAS, After Alexander Turney Stewart's death in 1876, his wife,
Cornelia, continued the development of the Village of Garden City by
erecting several buildings in his honor, The Cathedral of the
Incarnation, St. Paul's School and St. Mary's School; and
WHEREAS, Upon the death of Cornelia Stewart in 1886, her heirs
formed the Garden City Company in 1893, to continue the orderly
development of the Village of Garden City; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Village of Garden City continues its commitment
to enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Village of
Garden City, New York, recognizing the significance of the role it
continues to play in the life of the community of the State of New York;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Village of Garden City.
