Assembly Resolution No. 532

        HONORING  Jack  F.  Charney  upon  the occasion of
        being inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame  on
        July 28, 2019
 
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding  athletes  who  have  distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
 
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and  in  full  accord  with  its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Jack F. Charney upon the occasion of being inducted into the Rome Sports
Hall  of  Fame;  this  auspicious occasion will be celebrated on Sunday,
July 28, 2019, with a Ceremony at the Hall, followed  by  a  Banquet  at
Vernon Downs Casino Hotel in Vernon, New York; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Every year, the Rome Sports Hall of Fame publicly commends
the pursuit of athletic excellence, recognizes those who have  excelled,
and  strives  to preserve Rome's rich athletic heritage; Jack F. Charney
is truly deserving of this prestigious award; and
 
  WHEREAS, Jack F. Charney was born to Vera (Sargent) and  Dr.  Herman
Charney  in  Greeley,  Colorado,  in 1942; after the sudden death of his
father, he and his mother moved to Rome, New  York,  where  he  attended
Rome Free Academy; and
 
  WHEREAS,  A  talented  athlete,  Jack  F.  Charney  was  a  hurdler,
sprinter, long jumper, and a relay team member for the track  team,  and
served  as  the  co-Captain  of  his  school's  undefeated  1959  league
championship football team as both a defensive back and a running  back;
he also held the title of President of the Block R Club; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Upon  graduating,  Jack  F.  Charney played three years of
varsity football for Springfield College; after earning his  degree,  he
became  the  assistant  football  and track coach at Pulaski High in New
Britain, Connecticut, posting a 24-4 record over his four  years  there;
and
 
  WHEREAS, During the next more than 30 years, Jack F. Charney coached
at  colleges  mostly  in  New England including one year as the freshman
coach at his alma mater when he went back to receive his master's degree
in physical education; and
 
  WHEREAS, Jack  F.  Charney  then  coached  for  Norwich  University,
followed  by  American  International  College,  Brown  University, Dean
College, and Nichols College; throughout his esteemed  coaching  career,
he  produced  a  winning  record  of  147-93-2, and lived by his mantra,
"Surround yourself with good people and always strive for success.  Play
to win the game.  Otherwise, why keep score?"; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Jack  F.  Charney  has  clearly made a contribution to the
spirit of excellence which is a tradition of his Rome community; and
 
  WHEREAS, It  is  the  sense  of  this  Legislative  Body  that  when
individuals  of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to
our attention, they should be recognized by all  the  citizens  of  this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Jack F. Charney upon the occasion of being inducted into the  Rome
Sports Hall of Fame on July 28, 2019; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Jack F. Charney.
