COMMENDING Gloria L. Dolan posthumously upon the
occasion of her designation for special recognition
by Rensselaer County at its Honor a Deceased Veteran
Ceremony on September 9, 2019
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York,
who have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this
country's freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace
in peace- time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Gloria L. Dolan posthumously upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor a
Deceased Veteran Ceremony on Monday, September 9, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 8, 1930, in Moscow, Maine, Gloria Loraine
Steeves was the ninth of 10 children born to Rex Stanton and Goldie
Myrtle (Smith) Steeves; when she was four years old, the family moved to
a farm in Surrey, New Brunswick, where she attended a one room school
house before graduating from Hillsborough High School in 1947; and
WHEREAS, In 1953, Gloria L. Steeves joined the Women's Army Corp, at
the age of 23, entering active service at Fort Williams, Maine; after
Basic Training at Fort Lee, Virginia, she became a Company Clerk and was
stationed at Fort Mason in San Francisco, California; and
WHEREAS, Gloria L. Steeves met Andrew Dolan during her time in the
service and they married in 1956; one year later, while the couple was
stationed together in Okinawa, Japan, Gloria became pregnant and was
honorably discharged; and
WHEREAS, For her meritorious service, Gloria L. Dolan was the
recipient of the National Defense Service Medal; and
WHEREAS, In 1965, Gloria L. Dolan and her young family settled in
Troy, New York, where she devoted her life to building a loving home for
her husband and their four children, Andrew, Peter, Bret and Dorinda;
and
WHEREAS, Once her children were older, Gloria L. Dolan worked at
various jobs, later becoming a keypunch operator for Gardenway
(Troy-Built Equipment) Distributors; and
WHEREAS, Gloria L. Dolan died on April 13, 1992, at the age of 62;
she is buried at Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy, New York; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited her patriotism both at home and abroad,
Gloria L. Dolan demonstrated her love for her country and merits
forevermore, the highest respect of her State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended
and thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and
for their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Gloria L. Dolan posthumously upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor a
Deceased Veteran Ceremony; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Gloria L. Dolan.
