COMMENDING Dr. Alice Green upon the occasion of
her designation for special recognition by the
African American Cultural Center of the Capital
Region, Inc. on September 27, 2019
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Dr. Alice
Green upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by
the African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region, Inc. to be
celebrated at its 1st Annual Gala on Friday, September 27, 2019, at
Treviso by Mallozzi's in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green is being honored for her tireless efforts
to further the African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region's
mission of strengthening communities by fostering unity,
self-determination, cooperative economics, collective work, and
creativity; and
WHEREAS, In 1985, Dr. Alice Green founded and currently serves as
the Executive Director of the Center for Law and Justice, a civil rights
organization which provides community education in civil and criminal
justice, legal guidance, crisis intervention, and community planning and
organizing around criminal justice, civil rights and civil liberties
issues of particular concern to poor communities and those of color; and
WHEREAS, With an impressive history of service to the community, Dr.
Alice Green has served in such positions in New York State government as
Legislative Director with the New York Civil Liberties Union, a
professor at the University at Albany, Russell Sage and Siena College,
and as Director of the Trinity Institution in Albany's South End; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this remarkable woman has served as a prison
volunteer for over 20 years, and founded both the Paden Institute and
Retreat for Writers of Color and the African American Cultural Center of
the Capital Region, Inc.; she also holds the title of Vice President of
Senior Hope and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Capital
District Chapter of the NYCLU; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green writes and lectures on racism and criminal
justice, often does commentary and analysis for a number of newspapers,
television and radio programs, and has co-authored two books; and
WHEREAS, For her steadfast and unremitting commitment to her
community, Dr. Alice Green has been the recipient of numerous awards and
accolades including the Community Service Award by St. Rose College, the
Literary Legend Award by the Albany Public Library Foundation, the 2019
YWCA, Northeastern NY Women of Achievement Award, The Women's Fund of
the Capital Region Trailblazing Women of 2019 Award, and the Community
Service Award from Treatment Works; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Dr. Alice Green and actor Danny Glover were
co-recipients of the John Brown Freedom of Justice Award in 2016; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Alice Green upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the African American Cultural Center of the Capital
Region, Inc. on September 27, 2019; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Alice Green.
