Senate Resolution No. 2295

        COMMEMORATING   the   25th   Anniversary   of  the
        Sisoulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem, New York
 
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to  recognize  and
commend  those  institutions  of  commitment  and high achievement whose
purpose and endeavor have been dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in
the education of the youth of this noble Empire State; and
 
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern  and  in  full  accord  with  its
long-standing  traditions,  this  Legislative  Body  is  justly proud to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Sisoulu-Walker Charter School of
Harlem, New York, to be celebrated on Thursday, October 24, 2024; and
 
  WHEREAS, For 25 years, the Sisulu-Walker Charter School has  been  a
beacon  in the community, tirelessly pursuing its mission to prepare K-5
students living in  and  around  Central  Harlem  for  matriculation  to
outstanding  public,  private  and  parochial middle and high schools by
nurturing   their   intellectual,   emotional,   artistic   and   social
development; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  Sisoulu-Walker  Charter  School offers a rigorous and
challenging academic curricula taught by a highly prepared and committed
team of professional educators; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Beginning  in  kindergarten,  the  Sisoulu-Walker  Charter
School  prepares its students for college and a lifetime of achievement,
honor, and service in a small and supportive learning  environment  that
sets  high  expectations  and  encourages  strong parental and community
involvement; and
 
  WHEREAS, Furthermore, its classrooms are named with words  from  the
languages  of  Africa  and  the  African  Diaspora which drives home the
expectations for its students and the community; and
 
  WHEREAS, The school's crest personifies the  guiding  principles  of
the  Sisulu-Walker  Charter  School  of  Harlem, with the graduation cap
signifying achievement, the handshake representing honor, and the  medal
exemplifying service; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  Sisoulu-Walker Charter School is committed to helping
each student  develop  and  realize  his  or  her  individual  goals  of
achievement  by  setting  the highest expectations; its academic program
engages students in a wide range of subjects that nurture their capacity
to learn, to reason critically, and to apply knowledge in  a  moral  and
ethical way; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Students  are  also encouraged to develop and master their
natural  talents  in  the  arts,   athletics   and   civic   leadership;
Sisulu-Walker  students are shaped to become caring and involved members
of their community, and successful and contributing members  to  society
as a whole; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Under  the  able  leadership  of  its  Principal, Michelle
Haynes,  the  Sisulu-Walker  Charter  School  aspires  to  the   highest
standards   of  honor  and  integrity  through  its  commitment  to  the
fundamental values of honesty,  respect,  fairness,  trust,  responsible
citizenship, and compassion; and
 
  WHEREAS,  This  vital institution is named in honor of Walter Sisulu
and Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, two men who  have  dedicated  their  lives  to
public service in their communities; and
 
  WHEREAS,   Steeped   in   a   proud   and   distinguished   history,
Sisoulu-Walker Charter School may look back with pride upon  its  humble
beginnings,  find  just  satisfaction  in its purposeful growth and hold
true of purpose in its commitment to serving the  educational  needs  of
the citizens of Harlem and beyond; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate 25th Anniversary of the  Sisoulu-Walker  Charter  School  of
Harlem,  New  York,  noting the propriety of its goals, the constancy of
its commitment, and the significance of its accomplishments in preparing
the youth of today and leaders of tomorrow; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted  to Principal Michelle Haynes, Sisoulu-Walker Charter School
of Harlem, New York.
