MOURNING the tragic and untimely death of
11-year-old Luca S. Calanni of Hamburg, New York
WHEREAS, It is with feelings of deepest regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of Luca S. Calanni, an extraordinary little boy
of indomitable faith and dedication whose short, yet purposeful life
will long serve as a standard to which others might aspire; and
WHEREAS, The beloved son of Roger "Bodge" and Ashley (Buehler)
Calanni, Luca S. Calanni died on Saturday, January 11, 2020; and
WHEREAS, "In a world where you can be anything, be kind"; a quote
Luca S. Calanni truly embodied with his sincere compassion for others
and his unwavering kindness; and
WHEREAS, Luca S. Calanni, whose name means 'giver of light', was a
fifth-grade student at Pinehurst Elementary School, where he was known
for sitting next to the new kid and hanging out with the school nurse so
she didn't have to eat lunch alone; and
WHEREAS, A talented athlete, Luca S. Calanni played on two soccer
teams, the Frontier Lacrosse Team, and the Little Cagers Basketball
Team; he also participated in local junior PGA golf; and
WHEREAS, Luca S. Calanni adored his older sister and doted on his
two younger sisters, whom he played the Beatles song, "Here Comes the
Sun," daily; and
WHEREAS, An avid sports fan, Luca S. Calanni loved the Buffalo
Bills, Buffalo Sabres, New York Yankees and Ohio State University; his
dream was to attend Ohio State and become a lawyer; he also hoped to
start a Foundation to help those with fewer opportunities than him; and
WHEREAS, Wise beyond his 11 years on this earth, Luca S. Calanni
truly inspired the lives of countless others with his ambition and his
genuine passion for life; taken from this earth too soon, his legacy
will live on forever in his family, friends, and the hundreds within his
community who adored and admired his spirit and generosity; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the Luca S. Calanni Foundation created by
his family, the Buffalo Bills lit New Era Stadium orange on Saturday,
January 18, 2020, in loving memory of this sweet and remarkable little
boy; and
WHEREAS, Luca S. Calanni is survived by his parents, Roger and
Ashley Calanni; three sisters, Isabella, Talia and Frankie Calanni;
grandparents, Roger and Kathy (LaMarca) Calanni and Luke and Janet
(Clark) Buehler; aunts and uncles, Kelly Calanni, Jacob (Colleen
Colkitt), Caitlin, and Wesley Buehler; as well as many cousins and
family friends; and
WHEREAS, Luca S. Calanni brought so much joy to those around him
and, throughout his young life, made such a positive impact; his memory
will remain in the hearts of all those who had the honor of knowing him;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the tragic and untimely death of 11-year-old Luca S. Calanni of
Hamburg, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Luca S. Calanni.
