COMMENDING the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce
upon the occasion of celebrating the Military
Appreciation event on March 18, 2020
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly recognize those organizations within the State of New York
which have positively impacted their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Capital Region Chamber of Commerce's Unified Military Affairs
Council (UMAC) program upon the occasion of celebrating the Capital
Region military installations on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, in Albany,
New York; and
WHEREAS, The Unified Military Affairs Council program highlights the
importance of the military presence in the Capital Region and helps
ensure its long-term viability and success; and
WHEREAS, The Unified Military Affairs Council program increases
public knowledge of the contributions made by military units in the
Capital Region, all of which impact our global, national, state and
regional economy; and
WHEREAS, The Military Appreciation event will recognize and pay just
tribute to the men and women within the Capital Region who have served
or who are serving our country so valiantly and honorably; and
WHEREAS, The Stratton Air National Guard Base, located in Scotia,
New York, is home to the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift
Wing; and
WHEREAS, The 109th Airlift Wing flies the world's only ski-equipped
LC-130s "skibirds," as well as traditional C-130 "wheelbirds," in
support of Arctic and Antarctic operations; and
WHEREAS, Since 1988, the 109th Airlift Wing has provided airlift
support to the National Science Foundation's South Pole research
program; and
WHEREAS, The U. S. Army Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and
operated manufacturing facility located in Watervliet, New York; and
WHEREAS, Known as "America's Cannon Factory", the Watervliet Arsenal
is the nation's oldest, continuously-operated arsenal having begun its
manufacturing of military hardware during the War of 1812; and
WHEREAS, The Watervliet Arsenal is relied upon by U.S. and foreign
militaries to produce the most advanced, high-tech, high-powered
weaponry for cannon, howitzer, and mortar systems; and
WHEREAS, The Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, New York,
qualifies Naval officers and enlisted personnel in the operation,
maintenance and supervision of naval nuclear propulsion plants in
support of Fleet operations; and
WHEREAS, The Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, is one of
only two such units in the U.S. Navy; it trains and certifies
approximately half of the officers and enlisted personnel needed to
operate the U.S. Navy's reactor plants on nuclear-powered submarines
and aircraft carriers; and
WHEREAS, The Naval Support Activity Saratoga Springs, located in
Saratoga Springs, New York, provides shore readiness and operation
support to the Fleet, Fighter, Family and performs host command
functions for supported area commands including Personal Property,
Housing, Fleet and Family Support, Administrative, Morale, Welfare, and
Recreation services in the New York State Capital Area, Massachusetts,
and Vermont; and
WHEREAS, U.S. Army - Albany Recruiting Company, with headquarters
located on the Watervliet Arsenal, New York, encompasses 38,760
stateside square miles, and is responsible for the Army's recruiting
mission in Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle East; the Albany
Battalion's mission is to provide active Army and Army Reserve enlistees
for our nation's defense; and
WHEREAS, The Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Schenectady
provides training and administrative support to eight Navy Reserve
Units, and accomplishes this mission by providing advice, assistance,
and support to assigned Selected Reserve units and other participating
Reservists in order to ensure effective training and administration of
these units and personnel; and
WHEREAS, The NOSC's Glenville installation provides an opportunity
to drill Navy reservists close to home and is equipped with training
classrooms; and
WHEREAS, The Capital Region is honored to be home to these
critically important military installations and the proud and dedicated
service men and women who carry out their respective missions; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to salute the
Soldiers, Airmen, and Sailors of the military units stationed within the
Capital Region, to honor their dedication to preserving our freedom and
our Nation, and to recognize their individual and collective
contributions to our communities and to New York State; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce upon the occasion of
celebrating the Military Appreciation event on March 18, 2020; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce; the Commanding
Officers of the 109th Airlift Wing; the U. S. Army Watervliet Arsenal;
U.S. Army - Albany Recruiting Company; the Nuclear Power Training Unit,
Ballston Spa; the Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC), Schenectady;
the Naval Support Activity Saratoga Springs; and to each member of the
Congress of the United States from the State of New York.
