COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of The
Metropolitan Museum of Art
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge institutions that strive to provide lifelong
historic, cultural, and economic value, as well as opportunities to
benefit its communities, and the entire Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and
WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) was founded on
April 13, 1870, at 1000 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Met opened The Met Cloisters to the public in 1938,
which is devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe; and
WHEREAS, The Met opened a space dedicated to modern and contemporary
art in 2016, called The Met Breuer; and
WHEREAS, One of the world's greatest art centers, The Met displays
tens of thousands of objects of art at any given time in the
two-million-square-foot building on Fifth Avenue; and
WHEREAS, The Met continues to house extraordinary collected works of
Old Masters through modern and contemporary art, including amazingly
diverse pieces from around the world, encompassing 5,000 years of art;
and
WHEREAS, Several million people visit The Met each year to enjoy the
architectural ambiance, and one of the greatest art collections in the
world; and
WHEREAS, The Met hosts the world-renowned Met Gala, an annual event
that has taken place since 1948; it is attended by celebrities and art
enthusiasts alike; this auspicious event marks the opening of the
Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit; and
WHEREAS, In honor of this historic anniversary, The Met will be
presenting an exhibit named, "Making The Met, 1870 - 2020," which will
present a collection of more than 250 works of art taking visitors on a
journey through the history of the Museum; and
WHEREAS, The Met will also be displaying new works of art especially
gifted to the Museum in honor of its Sesquicentennial; moreover, the
opening of the newly renovated British Galleries, and the unveiling of
cross-cultural installations, as well as a vigorous schedule of events;
and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate
milestones in the histories of certain exceptional institutions, such as
The Met, in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges this brilliant establishment and its valuable contributions
to the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
