Senate Resolution No. 3202

MOURNING the death of John A. Marshall Jr.,
distinguished firefighter and devoted member of his
community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" A. Marshall Jr. of Mount Kisco, New York, died
on Friday, April 24, 2020, at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr. was born to Elizabeth M. and John A.
Marshall Sr. on January 10, 1930, at Northern Westchester Hospital in
Mount Kisco, New York; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr. was a lifelong member of the Mount
Kisco community and his contributions and service were endless; and
WHEREAS, In 1948, he graduated from Mount Kisco High School and
shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life, Eva, at the Goody Shop;
they were married in the chapel of St. Francis of Assisi Church on
September 2, 1951; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr. served his country as a member of the
United States Marine Corp and was honorably discharged with the esteemed
rank of Corporal in 1949; from there he served in the Army Reserve until
1953; he was honorably discharged and was awarded the Army of Occupation
Medal to recognize his service in Germany; and
WHEREAS, Upon returning from military service, John A. Marshall Jr.
went to work for his father at J.A. Marshall Sheet Metal Inc. in Mount
Kisco; he became the second-generation owner of the family business and,
after many years of hard work, he became a retiree of Sheet Metal
Workers Local Union 38; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr.'s commitment to excellence, and his
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise,
including charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, As a veteran, John A. Marshall Jr. was an active member and
Chaplain of the American Legion Moses Taylor Jr. Post 136; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, John A. Marshall Jr. was a dedicated member of
the Mount Kisco Independent Fire Company for 71 years; he served the
Independent Fire Company as Captain, President and Fire Commissioner
where he proudly served as Chairman; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr. was also a long-standing member and
past President of the Mount Kisco Rotary Club; in addition, he found
time to serve on various committees, including the Mt. Kisco Housing
Authority; and
WHEREAS, Faith had been a cornerstone in John A. Marshall Jr. life;
a lifelong parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi, he served on the Parish
Council and volunteered his time and expertise to service the buildings
and grounds; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr.'s true passions were equally devoted
to his family, close circle of lifelong friends, and to the brotherhood
of firefighters; his devotion to all was unmatched; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr. was well-travelled and enjoyed cruises
to many parts of the world; he also enjoyed trips to the Cape and to the
shore with the "Hummers and Tweeters" and was known for his sense of
humor and charismatic personality; and
WHEREAS, John A. Marshall Jr. was known for his artistic
capabilities and enjoyed creating metal sculpture, stained glass and
painting; he spent countless hours among his fellow senior citizens and
friends sharing his artistic talents at the Fox Center in Mount Kisco;
and
WHEREAS, When not tinkering and puttering, John A. Marshall Jr.
could often be found, in his younger years, fishing at Byram Lake, and
in later years, at the family lake house in the Berkshires; and
WHEREAS, He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Eva T.
Marshall; two children, Jane (Charlie) Pieragostini and John A. (Gail)
Marshall III; four grandchildren to whom he was known as "Two Dad,"
Leigh-Ann (Keith) Grasso, Brian (fiance Christine) Pieragostini, Andrew
and Sarah; and two great-grandchildren, Gianna and Vincent Grasso; as
well as two sisters, Elaine Fish and Barbara Errickson; and
WHEREAS, As the patriarch of the Marshall family, John A. Marshall
Jr. will be missed immensely; he will not only be remembered for his
dedication to family, friends and community, but for his bright smile,
big laugh and jovial personality; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, John A. Marshall Jr. leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of John A. Marshall Jr., and to express its deepest
condolences to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of John A. Marshall Jr.
