Senate Resolution No. 3357
 
BY: Senator BRESLIN
 
        HONORING  Diana  S. Waite upon the occasion of her
        designation  as  recipient  of  the  Excellence   in
        Historic  Preservation  Award  by  the  Preservation
        League of New York State
 
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative  Body  to  commend  the
efforts of those individuals who seek to bring recognition to historical
places  within  the  State  of New York, and in so doing, help to ensure
that the complete history of our  State  and  Nation  is  preserved  and
shared with present generations of citizens; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Diana S. Waite upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of  the
Excellence  in Historic Preservation Award by the Preservation League of
New York State; due to COVID-19, the ceremony will be held virtually  on
Tuesday, November 10, 2020; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Communities  across  New  York State, from large cities to
rural villages, benefit from historic preservation;  historic  buildings
anchor  communities,  inspire civic pride and drive tourism; restoration
work preserves history, creates jobs and boosts the economy; and
 
  WHEREAS, The Preservation League of New York State takes great pride
in shining a spotlight  on  those  who  are  leading  the  way  in  this
important  work;  Diana S. Waite is receiving this prestigious award for
her book, The Architecture of  Downtown  Troy:  An  Illustrated  History
which has informed, delighted, and surprised readers, thereby helping to
build  an  educated  constituency  for  the preservation of an important
American city; and
 
  WHEREAS, The Architecture of Downtown Troy: An Illustrated  History,
tells  the stories behind the many handsome and significant buildings in
downtown Troy and how they were designed and constructed,  stories  that
have   never  been  pulled  together  before;  for  the  first  time  in
generations, scores of  Troy  buildings  are  again  linked  with  their
architects,  some  local but others from out of town (the "starchitects"
of their day) and even from Europe; and
 
  WHEREAS, In addition to numerous historic images, the book  includes
contemporary photographs by local photographer Gary Gold; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Diana  S. Waite is the president of Mount Ida Press, which
specializes in historical-research, writing, and publishing projects and
publishes books on history and architecture; and the editor of  the  APT
Bulletin:  The  Journal  of  Preservation  Technology,  a  peer-reviewed
magazine with readers in more than 100 countries; and
 
  WHEREAS, This celebrated author/historian has also written or edited
publications for the New York Yacht Club,  the  Fort  Orange  Club,  the
University of Virginia, and Albany Law School; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Some  of Diana S. Waite's most recent and current projects
include histories of the Rotunda and  Pavilions  at  the  University  of
Virginia,  the  Statue  of  Liberty, Tweed Courthouse, the North Country
Garden Club of Long Island, and Whitehouse, home of the Yale  University
Summer School of Music; and
 
  WHEREAS, The residents of Troy consider themselves fortunate to live
in  a  region dense with historical architecture, and to the many people
who diligently work to preserve those local memories; and
 
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have  this  opportunity
to express its highest admiration for Diana S. Waite, and for all of the
individuals  who  have  worked  to bring proper attention to a place and
time which merits recognition in the grand panorama of  the  history  of
our State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Diana S. Waite upon the occasion of her designation  as  recipient
of  the  Excellence  in  Historic Preservation Award by the Preservation
League of New York State; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this  Resolution,  suitably  engrossed,  be
transmitted to Diana S. Waite.
