Assembly Resolution No. 18

        COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of the Village
        of Alden, New York
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  intent  of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate  the  distinguished  histories  of  the  communities   which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Village of Alden, New York; and
 
  WHEREAS, The Town of Alden is situated on the eastern border of Erie
County,  north of the center, with Newstead on the north, Genesee County
on the east, Manila on the south, and Lancaster on the west; the village
is centrally located within the Town  of  Alden,  and  is  part  of  the
Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area; and
 
  WHEREAS, The early growth of the village was slow; Thomas Farnsworth
built  a  tannery  in 1822, half a mile to the north, and the first post
office was established in 1823, from which date the  location  began  to
assume the character of a village; and
 
  WHEREAS,  On May 7, 1869, the Village of Alden was incorporated with
G.  F.  Vandervoort, E. W. Hendee, D. C. Skeels, J. B. Pride and  A.  D.
Farnsworth  as  its  Trustees;  a  reincorporation was effected in 1891,
during which time considerable street improvements were made; and
 
  WHEREAS, In 1854,  William  C.  Leonard  and  others  interested  in
education  built  a large frame building and established a seminary; the
Spring Creek Cheese Factory began operations in 1880 under the ownership
of Benjamin Gifford, and the Alden Natural Gas Company was organized  in
1892; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  Methodist  Church  at  Alden village was organized on
April 17, 1881, and the house of worship was erected in 1885; and
 
  WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Village of Alden continues  to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
 
  WHEREAS, The residents of the Village of Alden have a bright outlook
for  the  future  of their community, which remains a beautiful place in
which to live and raise a family; and
 
  WHEREAS, In recognition of the Village of Alden's rich  history  and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud  to  pay  tribute  to  this spirited town upon the occasion of its
150th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  150th  Anniversary  of the Village of Alden, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues  to  play  in  the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
 
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Village of Alden.
