HONORING Kathleen LaMoreaux upon the occasion of
her designation for special recognition by the New
York State Office for the Aging on May 21, 2019
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge
to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Kathleen
LaMoreaux upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition
by the New York State Office for the Aging at its Annual Older New
Yorkers Day Celebration on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at the Hart Theatre
Lounge in The Egg, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each May, the New York State Office for the Aging pauses to
acknowledge the outstanding contributions made by older citizens during
National Older Americans Month; and
WHEREAS, Members of older generations have helped build and shape
our Nation to be the greatest in the world; they have defended our
freedoms and values to ensure that those who come after them may have
better lives; nowhere in the Nation is the legacy of their efforts more
visible and more a part of the lives of all citizens than here in the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen LaMoreaux has continually demonstrated extreme
competence, extraordinary intelligence and diligent leadership in her
unwavering service to her community and, consequently, has been selected
for this most prestigious honor; and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as Kate, Kathleen LaMoreaux began her
illustrious career teaching in West Irondequoit and continued in Watkins
Glen Central Schools where she taught English and coached the Girls'
Swim Team, amassing an impressive record of wins and state titles; and
WHEREAS, As a 4-H leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and a member of the
CASA Board, Kathleen LaMoreaux has been able to continue working with
children outside of the classroom; since 1973, she has been the Program
Director and Instructor for the American Red Cross Summer Swim Program
in which thousands of Schuyler County children and adults have learned
to swim; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to her
community, Kathleen LaMoreaux volunteers for CareFirst, the Office for
the Aging Advisory Council, the Lions Club, St. James Episcopal Church
as a Senior Warden, and the Watkins-Montour Lions Club as an active
member and past President; and
WHEREAS, As an avid hammered dulcimer player, Kathleen LaMoreaux
also volunteers her musical talents to local organizational fundraisers
and events; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen LaMoreaux stays connected to her former students
directing and organizing the annual Summer Swim Program; she currently
leads 19 staff members including teen volunteers who are training to
become swim instructors; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she is a Certified Swim Official in New York
State and has educated thousands of children on how to swim while
promoting water safety; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen LaMoreaux is a member of the Watkins Glen High
School Section IV Athletic and Schuyler County Halls of Fame; and
WHEREAS, A lifetime resident of New York State, Kathleen LaMoreaux
graduated from Watkins Glen High School before earning a bachelor's
degree from SUNY Cortland and a master's degree in education from Elmira
College; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen and David LaMoreaux were united in marriage in
1970, and together they raised two sons, Peter and Philip; today, she is
the proud grandmother of four grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by
individuals for the benefit of others which Kathleen LaMoreaux has
displayed throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen LaMoreaux has enriched the lives of her family,
friends and colleagues through her love and respect for others, and
through the wisdom which comes from many years of living life to the
fullest; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kathleen LaMoreaux upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by the New York State Office for the Aging on May
21, 2019; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Kathleen LaMoreaux.
