Week in the State of New York
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official weeks that are set aside to increase awareness of serious
health issues that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim October 13-19, 2019, as
Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, An estimated 450 men die from breast cancer each year, a
number that is expected only to increase; and
WHEREAS, Breast cancer is widely believed to be a disease confined
to women, and due to a general lack of awareness that men can also
develop breast cancer, men are typically diagnosed during the disease's
later stages; and
WHEREAS, Promoting awareness and education about male breast cancer
is crucial to improving the health and well-being of men throughout the
State and nation, facilitating earlier detection, improving the
prognoses of men who have been diagnosed with the disease, and
ultimately preventing further loss of life; and
WHEREAS, In remembrance of the many men who have lost their lives to
breast cancer, and in support of those who are currently fighting this
often overlooked disease, every citizen, whether male or female,
including parents, siblings, spouses, educators, and physicians, is
encouraged to take part in spreading awareness of male breast cancer;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim October 13-19, 2019, as
Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week in the State of New York; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
