AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to doubling the
fines for traffic infractions and traffic misdemeanors committed in
school traffic control zones
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Section 1800 of the vehicle and traffic law is amended by
2 adding a new subdivision (i) to read as follows:
3 (i) Notwithstanding any other law, rule or regulation to the contrary,
4 that part of any highway adjacent to a school where maximum school speed
5 limits have been established, shall also be designated a school traffic
6 control zone and shall be clearly marked with the placement of either a
7 traffic light or stop sign at every intersection or corner immediately
8 surrounding a school safety zone within such school zone. All fines for
9 traffic infractions pursuant to this chapter, except for the fines for
10 speeding in a school speed zone as set out in paragraph four of subdivi-
11 sion (h) of section eleven hundred eighty of this chapter, which are
12 committed in a school traffic control zone shall be double the maximum
13 amount otherwise set out in this chapter for such infractions.
14 § 2. Section 1801 of the vehicle and traffic law is amended by adding
15 a new subdivision 3 to read as follows:
16 3. Notwithstanding any other law, rule or regulation to the contrary,
17 all fines for misdemeanor convictions pursuant to this chapter, which
18 are committed in a school traffic control zone shall be double the maxi-
19 mum amount otherwise set out in this chapter for such misdemeanor
20 convictions.
21 § 3. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall
22 have become a law. Provided that the commissioner of motor vehicles is
23 immediately authorized and directed to promulgate, amend and/or repeal
24 any rules and regulations necessary to implement the provisions of this
25 act on its effective date.
