AN ACT to amend the public authorities law, in relation to directing the
metropolitan transportation authority to establish a student fare
program for trains and buses
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Section 1266-l of the public authorities law, as added by
2 chapter 668 of the laws of 2022, is renumbered 1266-m and a new section
3 1266-n to read as follows:
4 § 1266-n. Student fare program. Notwithstanding any other provision of
5 law to the contrary, the authority shall establish a student fare
6 program. Such program shall provide each student in a city having a
7 population of one million or more, who attends kindergarten through
8 twelfth grade and who resides a half mile or more from the school such
9 student attends, with a fare reduction equal to the standard pay-per-
10 ride fare for three fares between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. each weekday
11 for any and all train and/or bus travel, including but not limited to
12 standard bus service and express bus service. Any difference between the
13 standard pay-per-ride fare and the required fare for such service shall
14 be paid by such student.
15 § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding
16 the date on which it shall have become a law. Effective immediately, the
17 addition, amendment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary
18 for the implementation of this act on its effective date are authorized
19 to be made and completed on or before such effective date.
