        Introduced  by  Sen. SANDERS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Education
 
        AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation  to  permitting  students
          made  homeless  by  an  act of terrorism or natural disaster to attend
          school in the school district in which they  resided  prior  to  being
          homeless for two school years after the event
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section  3209  of  the  education  law  is
     2  amended by adding a new paragraph c-1 to read as follows:
     3    c-1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, where
     4  a child becomes homeless as a result of an act of terrorism or a natural
     5  disaster  which  results  in  the declaration of a state of emergency or
     6  disaster by the state or by  the  federal  government,  such  child  may
     7  designate  and  continue to be enrolled in the school district of origin
     8  for up to two full school years after the act of  terrorism  or  natural
     9  disaster provided such school district is not overcrowded.
    10    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
