        Introduced  by  Sen.  AVELLA -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Higher Education
 
        AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to observance of  certain
          holidays  by  institutions  within  the  state university and the city
          university of New York
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-

        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 361 to
     2  read as follows:
     3    §  361.  Holidays  to  be  observed.  No  class or any other course of
     4  instruction shall be held in any institution within the state university
     5  on those days of religious observance  known  as  Eid  Ul-Fitr  and  Eid
     6  Ul-Adha,   provided,  however,  that  the  chancellor,  in  his  or  her
     7  discretion, may exempt any institution from the foregoing provisions  of
     8  this section.
     9    § 2. The education law is amended by adding a new section 6235 to read
    10  as follows:
    11    §  6235.  Holidays  to  be  observed.  No class or any other course of
    12  instruction shall be held in any institution within the city  university

    13  on  those  days  of  religious  observance  known as Eid Ul-Fitr and Eid
    14  Ul-Adha  provided,  however,  that  the  chancellor,  in  his   or   her
    15  discretion,  may exempt any institution from the foregoing provisions of
    16  this section.
    17    § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
