        Introduced  by Sens. BAILEY, STAVISKY -- read twice and ordered printed,
          and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education
 
        AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to expanding the  discov-
          ery program to all of New York City's specialized high schools
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. Paragraph (b) of subdivision 1 of  section  2590-h  of  the
     2  education law, as amended by chapter 345 of the laws of 2009, is amended
     3  to read as follows:
     4    (b)  all  specialized  senior  high  schools. The special high schools
     5  shall include the present schools known as:
     6    The Bronx High School of Science,  Stuyvesant  High  School,  Brooklyn
     7  Technical  High  School,  Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and
     8  the Arts in the borough of Manhattan, The Brooklyn  Latin  School,  High
     9  School  for  Mathematics  Science and Engineering at The City College of
    10  New York, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High
    11  School for the Sciences at York College, Staten  Island  Technical  High
    12  School, and such further schools which the city board may designate from
    13  time  to  time.  The  special schools shall [be permitted to] maintain a
    14  discovery program in accordance with the  law  in  effect  on  the  date
    15  preceding  the effective date of this section; admissions to the special
    16  schools shall be conducted in accordance with the law in effect  on  the
    17  date preceding the effective date of this section;
    18    § 2. Paragraph (b) of subdivision 1 of section 2590-h of the education
    19  law,  as  amended by chapter 720 of the laws of 1996, is amended to read
    20  as follows:
    21    (b) all specialized senior high  schools.  The  special  high  schools
    22  shall include the present schools known as:
    23    The  Bronx  High  School  of Science, Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn
    24  Technical High School, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School  of  Music  and
    25  the  Arts  in  the borough of Manhattan, The Brooklyn Latin School, High

     1  School, and such further schools which the city board may designate from

     4  preceding  the effective date of this section; admissions to the special
     5  schools shall be conducted in accordance with the law in effect  on  the
     6  date preceding the effective date of this section;
     7    §  3.  This act shall take effect on the first of July next succeeding
     8  the date on which it shall have become a  law;  provided,  however,  the
     9  amendments  to  paragraph  (b) of subdivision 1 of section 2590-h of the
    10  education law made by section one of this act shall be  subject  to  the
    11  expiration  and  reversion of such section pursuant to subdivision 12 of
    12  section 17 of chapter 345 of the laws of 2009,  as  amended,  when  upon
    13  such date the provisions of section two of this act shall take effect.
