        Introduced  by  Sen. PERSAUD -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Investigations and Govern-
          ment Operations
 
        AN ACT to amend the tax law and the election law, in relation to requir-
          ing tax preparation software to provide a link to  voter  registration
          websites
 
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section 1. Section 171 of the tax law  is  amended  by  adding  a  new
     2  subdivision twenty-ninth to read as follows:
     3    Twenty-ninth. Require that all electronic income tax preparation soft-
     4  ware  offered  for sale or use in the state of New York include a prompt
     5  providing a link to users of such software to a  New  York  state  voter
     6  registration  application  website  pursuant  to  section  5-231  of the
     7  election law.
     8    § 2. The election law is amended by adding a new section 5-231 to read
     9  as follows:
    10    § 5-231. Electronic income tax voter registration. The  department  of
    11  taxation and finance, in consultation with the state board of elections,
    12  shall  require  that  all  electronic  income  tax  preparation software
    13  offered for sale or use in the state of New York  include  a  prompt  to
    14  users  of  such  software which shall provide a link to a New York state
    15  voter registration application website.
    16    § 3. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day  after  it  shall
    17  have become a law.
