Assemblyman Brian Miller (R,I,C,Ref-New Hartford) today attended a press conference with members of the Assembly Minority Conference and the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) to discuss exempting volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers from the state’s income tax. A longtime advocate for volunteer firefighters, Miller is a sponsor of the new legislation (A.7655).

“With recruitment down, the state needs to do more to encourage people to volunteer as firefighters and EMS workers. This is a public safety issue,” said Miller. “The money volunteer firefighters would save are funds they are already spending on training and other costs associated with serving, so this is a commonsense way to help more people sign up.”

Miller is passionate about helping volunteer firefighters. As a local official, he helped to create a countywide scholarship program to help volunteer firefighters go to college, and he supports making that program statewide.
