Lavine Honors Plainview World War II Veteran on 92nd Birthday

Assemblyman Charles D. Lavine (D-Glen Cove) had the privilege of presenting World War II Veteran Murray Shultz, a Plainview resident, a citation on the occasion of his 92nd birthday.

In June 1944, Murray voluntarily joined the United States Navy just two days before his 18th birthday. He spent two years stationed in Norfolk, Virginia where he worked as a mechanic evaluating oil levels. In June 1946 he received an honorable discharged.

After returning home he attended SUNY Plattsburgh and later graduated from Syracuse University. On July 7, 1951 Murray married Gertrude Garelick and the couple moved to Plainview where they raised their two children, Helen and Howard.

Murray had a long career as an engineer and working in nuclear plant design. He often traveled to offices in Boston, Texas, Oswego and Shoreham.

In 1996, Murray got involved with the Jewish War Veterans of America. He said he wanted to help other veterans who were not as fortunate in life as he was.

“It was an honor to have been invited to celebrate Murray’s 92nd birthday,” said Lavine “it is easy to assume that he has lived a rich and fulfilling life based on the outpouring of love from friends and family.”

Murray and Gertrude have 4 grandchildren Danielle, Adam, Hannah and Melissa.
