Assemblyman Ra on Passage of Fifth State Budget Extender: “Time is Running Out”
A Statement by Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square), ranking Minority member on the Assembly Ways and Means Committee.
“The Legislature may have bought itself more time today, but for those across New York trying to finalize their own budgets, that time is running out.
“Schools, in particular, need clarity by April 22. Without knowing what’s in the final state budget, school districts can’t plan their own. It leaves hiring, investments in schools and other projects up in the air. That leaves school administrations stuck in a holding pattern when they should be preparing for the year ahead.
“And it’s not just schools. This uncertainty impacts municipalities, nonprofits and service providers—anyone whose fiscal year and planning depends on knowing what resources they’ll have. The state budget sends a signal, and without it, local leaders are left in the dark.
“Every extender we pass buys a few more days, but it’s not real progress and this one won’t be the last. New Yorkers are tired of delays and tired of borrowed time. Schools, local governments, veterans’ organizations, public libraries and more all have deadlines to meet—so let’s meet ours.”
