Assemblyman Ed Ra’s (19th Assembly District) legislative resolution proclaiming May 20th as ‘Transatlantic Flight Day’ in the state passed the Assembly this past Monday. The resolution came as a result of the Town of Hempstead’s role in commemorating and preserving a monument to Charles Lindbergh’s launching his famed transatlantic flight aboard the Spirit of St. Louis from Garden City’s Roosevelt Field. Ra specifically credited the work of Hofstra student Adam Sackowitz and Supervisor Kate Murray and the Town of Hempstead Landmarks Preservation Committee for their efforts in protecting, maintaining and working to enhance the educational value of the monument and Long Island’s role in creating this historic moment in American history and spawning the evolution of aviation.

“I was pleased to see my resolution for Transatlantic Flight Day pass the Assembly,” said Ra. “Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic Ocean changed the course of American history in the 20th Century, and the fact that this journey began right here in our community is a badge of honor for our residents. Since then, Long Island has continually been on the forefront of our nation’s aviation industry, from commercial aviation to space exploration. Transatlantic Flight Day acknowledges Long Island’s role in affording America the abilities to literally reach the stars.
