Cultivate Community This Holiday Season
It is an honor to represent this community in the New York State Assembly and I will continue to do my best to bring your concerns to Albany. I choose to focus on those things within our control – the good work that can be accomplished at the state level, the relationships with our families and friends, and the steps we can take to strengthen our community.
The holiday season is once again upon us, allowing us the opportunity to step back and take stock of what really matters. For most of us, the holidays are a time of food and fellowship, and a celebration of family traditions. Unfortunately, the holidays don’t always evoke those same warm feelings in every corner of our community. Nearly one in every five American children do not have enough to eat, [1] while some struggle to even find a place to sleep. So many of our neighbors go without basic day-to-day essentials, and the bridge between those in need and available assistance seems to grow wider. The season of giving is a perfect time to bring the community together, cultivate mutual care, and reflect on the ways that each of us can make Amherst and Western New York a better, more welcoming place for all.
To that end, I am partnering with the Town of Amherst to hold a Personal Needs Drive to ensure that no one in the district goes without basic essentials this holiday season. Donations of diapers, toiletries, hygiene products and new socks and underwear may be dropped at my office, 5500 Main Street, Suite 224 in Williamsville, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Northtown Center at Amherst, 1615 Amherst Manor Drive in Williamsville, will also accept donations from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. The drive runs through December 13.
These items, which are always in great demand, will be distributed among the food pantries in the Town of Amherst. Together, we can ensure that our neighbors have the little essentials that we often take for granted.
I hope you will join me in observing the true spirit of the season. Thanksgiving is a reminder that our country was founded on the principles of community, solidarity and love of our neighbors that shine through our fondest national and religious traditions. I am anticipating a busy legislative session starting in January but, for now, I hope to enjoy the blessings of the season with my family and friends. From my family to yours, may you have a healthy, happy and blessed Thanksgiving and holiday season.
