Statement on Update to Case of Missing Woman Destini Smothers in Queens
Queens – Assembly Member Khaleel M. Anderson issued the following statement regarding an update on the case Destini Smothers, a missing 26-year-old woman from Troy, New York:
“I am utterly heartbroken to learn of the passing of Destini Smothers, a beloved daughter, granddaughter, mother, and friend that grew up in Far Rockaway and was first declared missing in November of 2020. Earlier this morning, a body was discovered in the trunk of a car that was being towed away in South Ozone Park. Detectives determined that the body appeared to be that of the missing Ms. Smothers.
I joined in hope and solidarity along with so many others in the community who learned of Ms. Smothers’ missing status, all of us hoping and praying that she would be found while working to raise awareness of her missing status. This tragic update confirms our worst fears.
Today’s harrowing discovery does not mean the end of Ms. Smothers’ case. My office will continue to pursue accountability and stand with the family and community who are all traumatized by this devastating loss.”
Anyone who may have information regarding Destini Smothers’ case is urged to reach out to Det. Hughes at the NYPD 101 precinct: 718-868-3528. For Non-Police correspondence, please reach out to our office at 718-327-1845. ALL TIPS WILL REMAIN ANONYMOUS AND CONFIDENTIAL.
