Today, news outlets reported migrant refugees who continue to pour into the U.S. from the southern border and have been transported to New York state are being given court dates ten years away. New York State Assemblyman Matt Slater, who introduced legislation (A.7319), which ensures proper background checks, registration and tracking of refugees seeking asylum, blasted the Biden administration’s inaction to expedite asylum court dates.

“The Biden administration’s decade delay for asylum seekers is an unacceptable disaster that places a long-term burden on local taxpayers who are forced to foot the bill,” Slater said. “We cannot let those here illegally, living on taxpayer dollars, go unchecked for a decade. It is wrong for New York’s taxpayers, which is why my legislation is so imperative from a safety and accountability standpoint.”

As part of this year’s budget, New York City received $1 billion in taxpayer funds to assist in its management of the influx of migrants being transported to New York from the southern border with some estimates putting the projected cost at nearly $5 billion by 2024.
