Slater, Harckham Announce $3.5 Million Repaving Project for Route 312 in Town of Southeast
Assemblymember Matt Slater and New York State Senator Pete Harckham announced today that the state was funding a $3.5 repaving project for Route 312 here in the Town of Southeast. The project is one of 70 statewide that are being initiated to protect New York’s roadways from inclement weather while also enhancing the sustainability of aging infrastructure.
“The Hudson Valley has the worst-rated roads in New York State, despite residents paying some of the highest taxes in the country. This unacceptable reality not only puts drivers at risk but also hinders economic growth and quality of life,” said Slater. “Albany must prioritize significant and sustained investment in our infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and drivable roads for all. It's time to deliver the resources our communities need to fix this long-standing issue and provide the quality infrastructure our region deserves.”
“Motorists in the Town of Southeast rely on Route 312, as it is the main thoroughfare between Routes 6 and 22, but like many of our state roadways, it has been impacted by severe weather conditions in recent years,” said Harckham. “This repaving project will benefit local residents, commuters and business owners who travel on Route 312, and given its volume of traffic makes this improvement project a critical one.”
In total, about three miles of the 4.42-mile-long Route 312, from just west of the MTA Metro-North Railroad grade crossing to the intersection with Route 22 in Sears Corner, will be repaved. The roadway project is part of one $100 million infrastructure initiative to deal with the damaging freeze-thaw cycles, winter storms and increasing summer temperatures that are playing havoc with roads.
The State Department of Transportation is already responding to snow and ice events all across New York State. Paving investments in the face of extreme weather help ensure that state highways remain in good repair and have the added benefit of making it easier for Department staff to perform snow and ice operations across New York more effectively and efficiently.
The Route 312 repaving project is expected to go out to bid in Spring 2025. The work will consist primarily of milling two inches of the existing pavement and then placing down a two-inch overlay of asphalt in addition to repairing any detectable pavement damage. Traffic signal vehicle detection will be upgraded during the project as well.
“Investing in and maintaining our aging infrastructure are essential to keeping people and businesses connected with each other,” said Town of Southeast Supervisor Nick Durante. “Varying weather conditions all year long require us to take extra measures to ensure motorists can travel on our roads safely. I’m grateful to our state partners for securing the funding to strengthen our local infrastructure, and I look forward to our continued work together.”
